Oakland Raiders An FYI
This National Football (NFL) Team was founded in 1960. It has branded their stadium McAfee Coliseum. Their logo consists of a helmeted pirate with two crossed sword behind him (pirate).
In 1960 the Raiders were the eighth charter members of the American Football League (AFL); here they won one championship and also three division titles. The Raiders actually joined the NFL in 1970 due to the merger between AFL and NFL. After the merger the team has managed to win 12 division titles and 3 super bowls having featured in 5 super bowls.
Currently the Oakland Raiders are playing in the Western Division of the American Football Conference in the NFL. Their division rivals include the Kansas Chiefs, San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos.
Lately the Raiders have had their key player injured. Ricky Brown who is a student at the Boston College has a groin injury. The linebacker of the Raiders picked up the injury and is out for the rest of the season. Another player that has picked up a similar injury is Stanford Routt, the Houston college student plays the cornerback position, and he is credited with having played a key role in the Raiders wins, however his condition is questionable as the team doctors are yet to confirm if he will play again.
Another doubtful player is the cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, the California College student picked up a neck injury and the team doctors are yet to confirm if he will play. With the similar injury is Raiders running back Justin Fargas; he is a student at the USC College.
Another running back with injury woes is Arkansas College student Darren McFadden; he picked up an ankle injury. Also injured is wide receiver Ronald Curry; he is a student at the North Carolina College.
Kalimba Edwards who plays at the defensive end, picked up an ankle injury, he is a student at South Carolina.
Though the injury scare is much, the team has decided to extend the contract of Chris Johnson by four years, with this extension Johnson will have played in the NFL for seven seasons. Johnson’s start has been solid and has been credited with intercepting 3 passes and 12 pass defense. Not only has Johnson’s contract been extended, the Raiders have acquired Bruce Gradkowski. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders opted for Andrew Walter and Marques Tuliasosopo instead of their new signing last season.
Gradkowski is a professional with three years experience having formerly played for the Browns and the Rams.
To their preparations for the 2009 season, the Oakland raiders have hired former coach Jim Michalczik to be the offensive line coach. This is only five days after appointing a full time coach. Tom cable has finally been appointed the official full coach, before his signing cable was just an interim coach and had joined the club as the offensive coach.
Cable had a tough time before despite leading the Raiders to victories at the end of their losing season which had run consecutively.

George Steinbrenner Coached Ohio State Football With Woody Hayes & Won a National Championship
George Steinbrenner is famously known the world over as the owner of the New York Yankees but very few people realize that in the 1950s George Steinbrenner actually served as an assistant coach under legendary Buckeye icon Woody Hayes at Ohio State University (OSU for short). In fact, George was even part of the 1954 Ohio State national championship team that went undefeated.
The New York Yankees organization that Steinbrenner has owned for decades has been valued by Forbes magazine as a $1.5 billion organization which makes it one of the five most valuable sports teams in the world across all sports. Before making his fortune in the family shipping business he lived a somewhat pedestrian life that included college, a stint in the Air Force, marriage, and a brief spell as an assistant football coach at Ohio State. In some regards George Steinbrenner has had an almost Forest Gump type life that has involved playing on his college football team, joining the armed forces, falling in love, making a fortune, numerous chance encounters with historically iconic figures, and a variety of unique business ventures.
Born in Rocky River, Ohio on the northern edge of the state the area that is now an affluent suburb of Cleveland is the area where George grew up before attending a military school in northern Indiana. After graduating from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1952 and spending a couple of years in the Air Force based in Columbus, Ohio at Lockbourne Air Force Base the Ohio native decided to stay in the area following his honorable discharge in 1954. Over the next two years Steinbrenner earned a master’s degree in physical education from nearby Ohio State University.
While doing graduate work at Ohio State George Steinbrenner signed on to help the football team as a graduate assistant where he happened to coach under legendary college football coach Woody Hayes. During the one season that George was with the Buckeyes the team went undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record that included a 20-7 Rose Bowl victory over the University of Southern California (USC) on January 1, 1955.
By capping off a perfect season with a sound Rose Bowl victory Woody Hayes, George Steinbrenner, and the rest of the Ohio State Buckeyes edged out number two ranked UCLA to capture the second football national championship for the Buckeyes ever. In addition to the seven World Series victories (1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) that George Steinbrenner has been a part of as an owner of the New York Yankees since January 3, 1973 the man who was born back on July 4, 1930 can also claim a college football national championship from the 1954 season with iconic College Football Hall of Fame coach Woody Hayes.

NFL Signs Football Deal With Nike
Nike has become the latest sports brand to take on the uniforms and fan apparel of the National Football League (NFL) in America. Rivals Reebok, who have worked in collaboration with the NFL for the past decade will not have their contract renewed when it ends in 2012.
The agreement was announced by the NFL in Chicago and provided the names of six other apparel partners. New Era Cap Co. has been announced as the official cap supplier and will handle on-pitch headwear as other companies will continue to provide fan clothes and headwear. Reebok executives had already admitted defeat to the American press before the deal was done and were not concerned that the lost bid would damage their company.
Over the past decade Reebok have been in partnership with the NFL and they will leave on amicable terms. They released a statement earlier this month crediting the partnership for doubling sales since working together. Though details are sketchy at the moment it is thought that Nike has been awarded a five year contract. The deal may seem like a massive loss for Adidas owned Reebok, but they have various sporting contracts in America that pull in big earnings. Adidas currently hold uniform rights to the National Basketball Association, Major League Soccer and the National Hockey League.
Nike are already a prevalent site on the pitch, through its partnerships with individual players like Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings and Drew Brees who plays for the New Orleans Saints. Nike already has on-field exposure rights for its football gloves, the swoosh logo can be seen on players football boots, and their advertisements feature heavily in television breaks.
The terms of the deal have not yet been confirmed, but Nike is already excited about the 5-year deal, which they expect will enhance the Nike brand and provide a “significant opportunity to drive growth across the business”.

Pointers for purchasing a Car Insurance ืืืืื ืจืื
Itโs mandatory as per the law, that every driver should own insurance for his vehicle. Most of the people just go ahead and buy an insurance which is the cheapest in the market regardless of the benefits and loss of their safety. A smart driver should always keep the following pointers in mind before purchasing a Car Insurance.
1. One must always check the limits imposed by the insurance company on the amount payable by them in case of an accident. The higher the amount, the higher premium has to be paid.
2. Itโs also surprising to know that most of the companies donโt cover the expenses required to cover the damage caused to the other party in case of an accident. Thus itโs very important to read the terms and clauses of the policy before purchasing it.
3. One must also consider oneโs driving skill, past records and must go for a car insurance that will cover every eventual possibility.
4. Mostly people go for cheap insurances to follow the law, but one can predict the future, anything is possible. Thus it would be advisable to spend a couple of hundred dollars more on insurance at present to prevent paying thousands of dollars in future.
5. One must also check the credentials of the company you are purchasing your ืืืืื ืจืื from, this will help you rule out if the company is genuine or fraud.
The peace of mind which one receives after getting insured is worth it, even if you donโt get its benefit.
Football Systems Blitz With a Purpose
One of the most exciting plays in football comes in the form of a blitzing linebacker or defensive back creeping up to the line and then attacking the quarterback at the snap of the ball. It’s almost expected, especially when a team is put in a position whereby they need a big play or long yardage in order to convert to a first down. A good football defensive system implements a solid blitzing scheme for either pass or run situations.
There’s nothing that can pump fans up more in football than a quarterback sack, a forced turn-over, or a running back getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on a called blitz.
But what are the pitfalls of blitzing and opponent?
Predictability comes to mind! For instance, if you continuously blitz eventually you’re going to pay the price of being too predictable. In other words a good football offensive co-ordinator or quarterback will eventually call a play that will take advantage of your blitzing personnel and take advantage of that player vacating his normal area of responsibility. Dump the football in this area and probably get a decent gain out of it.
Now your strategy at this point will begin to change and you’ll hesitate to blitz for fear of giving up another big gain. The advantage certainly swings in favour of the offence as they have more time and space to manage the football. Not good for you though!
Blitzing is a big part of any youth football system. The point is: don’t be too predictable, use different looks and players when you blitz, as well as different pass coverage’s whether it be man or zone. Also, don’t always blitz when the offence is in a long yardage situation, mix up the downs as well. Blitzing on first down has commonly been referred to as the run blitz. Disguise your blitzes by showing blitz, but then at the snap of the ball, having your players all drop back into coverage. This can confuse any quarterback and now they will hesitate at changing the play at the line of scrimmage now giving your football defence more and time and space.

Both Auburn and Oregon Prove Why They Should Play for the National Championship
Auburn and Oregon both passed the last hurdle between their final opponent and a date against each other to determine college football’s 2010 national champion.
No. 2 Auburn obliterated any hopes 18th-ranked South Carolina had of a Southeastern Conference title shot by crushing the Gamecocks 56-17 in their playoff game at Atlanta (GA). The difference on paper was junior college transfer Cam Newton, an overnight sensation on the major college scene who has benefited from a strong supporting cast of Tigers around him.
Newton led Blinn College to the 2009 Junior College National Championship, passing for 2,833 yards and 22 touchdowns, and rushing for 655 yards and 16 TDs. Rivals.com had Newton as a 5-star athlete and the No. 1 JUCO prospect. Man, were they right.
Newton scorched South Carolina for 335 yards passing and 4 scoring passes, and for 73 yards rushing and another 2 scores. During Auburn’s unbeaten, 13-0 regular season, Newton has produced 49 scores by running, passing and receiving. That is more than the entire touchdown output among 87 of the 119 NCAA Division 1-A teams (or 73%).
His season totals for passing include 2,500+ yards (67% completion rate) with 28 TD passes against 6 interceptions. His totals for rushing include 1,400+ yards (5.82 yards per carry) and 20 TDs. He has one receiving TD, making 49 total touchdowns. Auburn ranks 6th nationally in scoring offense, and 7th in total offense.
No. 1 Oregon took its merry time getting in control on the road against Oregon State with a 16-7 halftime lead. That changed in the 2nd half as the Ducks scored 3 times and held the Beavers to 13 points, winning 37-20, not nearly as impressive as Auburn. That said, Oregon punched its ticket to the national showdown with a perfect 12-0 mark.
The closer score did cause the AP Top 25 voters to move Auburn in front of Oregon in the new rankings after the weekend.
The win gave Auburn the SEC title with a perfect 9-0 record, and Oregon became the Pacific 10 champion with a perfect 9-0 mark.
Auburn won the national championship in 1957, but neither Auburn nor Oregon has played in a national championship game since the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) system was instituted in 1998. Auburn and Oregon have never met in competition.
The BCS National Championship Game will be played on Monday, Jan. 10 in Glendale (AZ). It should be an offensive circus since Oregon has the No. 1 highest-scoring offense (49+ points per game) and Auburn is ranked 6th (42+ ppg). Oregon is also 2nd in total offense and Auburn 7th. So the sparks will fly when these two clash.
The next biggest news was 96th-ranked Miami-Ohio (9-4) upsetting favored 45th-ranked Northern Illinois (10-3), 26-21, to claim the Mid-American Conference title. Both teams were 8-1 in conference play.
Miami-Ohio will meet Middle Tennessee (6-6) in the Godaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6, and Northern Illinois squares off against Fresno State (8-4) in the Humanitarian Bowl on Dec. 18.
In a game of surprises, 10th-ranked Oklahoma (11-2) spotted Nebraska (10-3) a 20-17 halftime lead before shutting out the Cornhuskers in the 2nd half while scoring a couple of field goals to win, 23-20. The Sooners take the Big 12 title at 7-2, and will now face Connecticut (8-4) in the BCS Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Connecticut won the Big East title (AKA “the biggest joke”), and got a free pass into a BCS game by doing so – a severe travesty of justice. There are at least 24 teams as qualified or more qualified to play Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Connecticut is a real weak sister; the Huskies are currently rated 25th in the new AP Poll, the first time they have been in the AP Poll all year.
The 12th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies, who lost their first 2 games and then won 11 straight, beat 20th-ranked Florida State (9-4) to claim the Atlantic Coast Conference title, and will now meet 5th-ranked Stanford (11-1) in the BCS Orange Bowl on Jan. 3.
In other action, 9th-ranked Boise State (11-1) beat Utah State 50-14, 14th-ranked Nevada (12-1) beat Louisiana Tech 35-17, 23rd-ranked West Virginia (9-3) beat Rutgers 35-14, and 25th-ranked Hawaii (10-3) beat UNLV 59-21.
Boise State will play Utah (10-2) in the Maaco Bowl on Dec. 22, Nevada faces Boston College (7-5) in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Jan. 9, West Virginia gets North Carolina State (8-4) in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 28, and Hawaii will meet Tulsa (9-3) in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve.
One other game deserves mention. The unranked Washington Huskies (6-6) won their 3rd straight game to become bowl eligible by beating unranked, in-state rival Washington State (2-10), 35-28.
The Huskies were led by the running of Chris Polk, who gained 284 yards on 29 carries (9.79 ypc) while scoring twice on runs of 2 and 57 yards. Touchdown passes of 61 yards and 27 yards by senior QB Jake Locker to Jermaine Kearse helped a bunch. The 27-yarder produced the go-ahead lead on a leaping catch in the end zone with 44 seconds left to play.
Washington will face Nebraska (10-3) in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30. The Cornhuskers invaded Husky Stadium earlier this year and absolutely trashed Washington, 56-21. Jake Locker, who has played injured much of the season, had his worst day as a Husky. Nebraska should be heavily favored in this game, and the Huskies are not the same team that faced them earlier, which Nebraska may figure out soon enough.
The majority of ranked teams have already finished their regular season play. They include TCU (3rd), Wisconsin (4th), Stanford (5th), Ohio State (6th), Michigan State (7th), Arkansas (8th), LSU (12th), Missouri (14th), Oklahoma State (15th), Texas A&M (18th), Alabama (19th), Utah (21st) and Mississippi State (22nd).
There is only one more regular season game to be played this Saturday – the annual Army-Navy game.
The bowl-game action starts Saturday, Dec. 18, with Brigham Young (6-6) and UTEP (6-6).
I am skipping my Top 25 Poll this week since the regular season is over. I will run a final Top 25 Poll after all of the bowl games are played.

Football – Defensive Strategy
Bill Belichick is said to be one of the greatest defensive strategists of the modern era. While we’re not going to pick apart Bill’s game plan to try to figure out why he’s so good at what he does, we are going to take a very basic look at defensive strategy and how to make your defense as effective as possible.
Unlike the offense, which essentially dictates how the play is going to go down, the defense is more reactionary, not that it can’t take an aggressive stance. We’ll get into that later. But for the most part, the defense has to react and react quickly to what the offense is doing. A split second can mean the difference between a stop and a score.
The offense basically has only two play options if you simplify this game. They are pass and run. Depending on which one the offense chooses, the defense must react accordingly.
Most pass plays are pretty obvious. The quarterback will take the ball from center and drop back in the pocket about 2 or 3 yards to pass. This is something that the defense will spot immediately and can react to by having their secondary go into proper coverage, since they now don’t have to worry about a run breaking into the secondary. They can give all their attention to the receivers.
But with some pass plays, they are not so obvious. The quarterback may take the ball from center and fake a handoff to a running back. The defense must not allow itself to be faked out by this. They need to keep their eye on the quarterback to see if he still has the ball. There is only so long that he can hide it. In the meantime, the front line of the defense can still stop the running back, even if he doesn’t have the ball.
In many cases, the play that is coming is going to be pretty obvious. In a third down and inches to go, the offense is going to look to run the ball. The defense will pretty much jam the box in this scenario in an attempt to keep the running back from making the first down. The same is true with long yardage plays. If it’s third down and 20 to go, you can pretty much have your front line blitz the quarterback and maybe even a strong safety along with it. The chances of a run here are pretty slim.
In all these instances, however, the defense is reacting. Well, the defense can also take a proactive stance. It can change its looks for each play, thus trying to confuse the offense with its coverage. This is something that Bill Belichick did so well as a defensive coordinator and even today as a head coach. The key to this game is to always keep your opponent guessing. Once he knows what’s coming all the time, your chances of stopping him on defense become much more slim.
Football
Football Offensive Formations
Offensive formations
Before the ball is snapped the offensive team lines up in a formation. Most teams have a “base” formation they prefer to line up in, while other teams leave the defense guessing. Teams will often have “special formations” which they only use in obvious passing situations, short yardage or goaline situations, or formations they have developed for that particular game just to confuse the defense. Because there are a nearly unlimited number of possible formations, only a few of the more common ones are listed below.
Pro Set
The Pro Set is a traditional formation commonly, a “base” set used by professional and amateur teams. The formation has two wide receivers, one tight end, and two running backs with the backs split behind the quarterback, who is lined up behind center. The running backs are lined up side-by-side instead of one in front of the other as in traditional I-Formation sets.
Shotgun formation
The Shotgun formation is an alignment used by the offensive team in American and Canadian football. This formation is used by many teams in obvious passing situations, although other teams do use this as their base formation. In the shotgun, instead of the quarterback receiving the snap from center at the line of scrimmage, he stands at least 5 yards back. Sometimes the quarterback will have a back on one or both sides before the snap, while other times he will be the lone player in the backfield with everyone spread out as receivers. One of the advantages of the shotgun formation are that the passer has more time to set up in the pocket which gives him a second or two to locate open receivers. Another advantage is that standing further back from the line before the snap gives the quarterback a better “look” at the defensive alignment. The disadvantages are that the defense knows a pass is more than likely coming up (although some running plays can be run effectively from the shotgun) and there is a higher risk of a botched snap than in a simple center/quarterback exchange.
The formation got its name after it was used by a professional football club, the San Francisco 49ers, in 1960. Combining elements of the short punt and spread formations (“spread” in that it had receivers spread widely instead of close to or behind the interior line players), it was said to be like a “shotgun” in spraying receivers around the field like a scatter-shot gun. Formations similar or identical to the shotgun used decades previously would be called names such as “spread double wing”. Short punt formations (so called because the distance between the snapper and the ostensible punter is shorter than in long punt formation) don’t usually have as much emphasis on wide receivers.
At times the formation has been more common in Canadian football, which allows only three downs to move ten yards downfield instead of the American game’s four. Canadian teams are therefore more likely to find themselves with long yardage to make on the penultimate down, and therefore more likely to line up in the shotgun to increase their opportunities for a large gain. Teams such as the Saskatchewan Roughriders utilize the shotgun for a vast majority of their plays.
Wishbone formation
The wishbone formation, also known simply as ‘bone, is a play formation in American football.
The wishbone is primarily a running formation with one wide receiver, one tight end and three running backs behind the quarterback (who takes the snap under center). The back lined up behind the quarterback is the fullback and the other two are halfbacks (although they may be called tailbacks or I backs in some playbook terminology).
The wishbone is often associated with the option as this formation allows the quarterback to easily run the option to either side of the line. It is also ideal for running the triple option.
History
The wishbone was developed by Offensive Coordinator Emory Bellard and Head Coach Darrell Royal at the University of Texas in 1968. Coach Royal was always a fan of the option offense, and in looking at the personnel on the team, Coach Bellard saw three great running backs. After experimenting with family members over the summer, Coach Bellard came up with the formation.
Coach Bellard demonstrated the formation to Darrell Royal, who quickly embraced the idea. It proved to be a wise choice: Texas tied its first game running the new offense, lost the second, and then won the next thirty straight games, leading to two National Championships using the formation.
It was given the name wishbone by the Houston Chronicle sportswriter Mickey Herskowitz.
A variation to this formation is called the flexbone.
I formation
The I formation is one of the most common offensive formations in American football. The I formation draws its name from the vertical (as viewed from the opposing endzone) alignment of quarterback, fullback, and running back, particularly when contrasted with the same players’ alignments in the now-archaic T formation.
The formation begins with the usual 5 offensive linemen (2 offensive tackles, 2 guards, and a center), the quarterback under center, and two backs in-line behind the quarterback. The base variant adds a tight end to one side of the line and two wide receivers, one at each end of the line.
Typical roles
The I formation is typically employed in running situations. The fullback typically fills a blocking, rather than rushing or receiving, role in the modern game. With the fullback in the backfield as a blocker, runs can be made to either side of the line with his additional blocking support. This is contrasted with the use of tight ends as blockers who, being set up at the end of the line, are able to support runs to one side of the line only. The fullback can also be used as a feint–since the defense can spot him more easily than the running back, they may be drawn in his direction while the running back takes the ball the opposite way.
Despite the emphasis on the running game, the I formation remains an effective base for a passing attack. The formation supports up to three wide receivers and many running backs serve as an additional receiving threat. While the fullback is rarely a pass receiver, he serves as a capable additional pass blocker protecting the quarterback before the pass. The running threat posed by the formation also lends itself to the play-action pass. The flexible nature of the formation also helps prevent defenses from focusing their attention on either the run or pass.
Common variations
Many subtypes of the I formation exist, generally emphasizing the running or passing strengths of the base version.
* The Big I places a tight end on each side of the offensive line (removing a wide receiver). Coupled with the fullback’s blocking, this allows two additional blockers for a run in either direction. This is a running-emphasis variant.
* The Power I replaces one wide receiver with a third back (fullback or running back) in the backfield, set up to one side of the fullback. This is a running-emphasis variant.
* The Jumbo or Goal-line formation further extends the Power I or Big I, adding a second or third tight end to the line, respectively. This variant has no wide receivers and is all but exclusively a running formation intended to reliably gain minimal yardage, most commonly two yards or less.
* The Three-wide I replaces the tight end with a third wide receiver. This is a passing-emphasis variant.
The I formation, in any variant, can also be modified as Strong or Weak. In either case, the fullback lines up roughly a yard laterally to his usual position. Strong refers to a move towards the side of the quarterback with more players, weak in the opposite direction. These modifications have little effect on expected play call.

In the NFL, the I formation is less frequently used than in college, as the use of the fullback as a blocker has given way to formations with additional tight ends and wide receivers, who may be called on to block during running plays. The increasingly common ace formation replaces the fullback with an additional receiver, who lines up along the line of scrimmage. The I will typically be used in short-yardage and goal line situations.
Goal Line formation
Single set Back
Single set back is a base formation in American Football used by the offensive team which requires only one running back behind the quarterback. There are many variations on single back formations including two tight ends and two wide receivers, one tight end/three wide receivers, etc. The running back can line up directly behind the quarterback or offset either the weak side (away from the tight end) or the strong side(towards the tight end).

LSU Tigers – Coaches Leading LSU to the National Championships
Life is about competition. We work our way to meet our goals. It is not an easy ride but it is something that we must do in order to progress. Everyday we go to school to be competitive in our future jobs. In our everyday jobs, we work our way to get a promotion and a salary raise. However, we do not do it alone. There will always be people who will take part in keeping us on track with our everyday challenges just to reach the end goal. Sometimes, those people are whom we call our guardians, our parents, our counselors or even our life coach.
In sports, whether team or individual, there will always be one person or more to watch out for the team. Of course, they do not act as a police patrol to keep reprimanding the team what not to do. However, they are there to discipline, train and keep the team on track with their goal to win the championship match in every league they join. One of the sports that have many coaches is football. A team full of big and tough men needs more than one person to handle them. However, there will be only one coach that manages the team overall and they are the head coaches.
Let us now look at the coaches of the LSU Tigers football team, who helped them win national championships.
1. Paul Dietzel- He led the team to win National Championships way back 1958. Coaching for this time was one of the best years he had. American Football Coaches Association and Football Writers Association of America named him National Coach of the Year at the time they won the National Championships. He loved the team so much and led them to become the number one in the country. He quoted, “I never considered going anywhere else because I thought LSU was the best coaching job in America”
2. Nick Saban- He was the head coach of the team from 2000-2004. He made history when he led the team to win their second National Championships in 2003.
3. Les Miles- He is the current head coach of the team. He has been helping the team to perform at their best whether it is nationals or just SEC championships. One of his greatest achievements was to lead the team to win the BCS National Title Game last year. It is one of the most important events in the history of LSU Tigers as he made this team the only team to win two BCS national championship titles.
In the field of sports, coaches play a vital role in winning. They can see through the strengths and weaknesses of every player and use that to create a successful play. You can love the most valuable player in the team but in the hearts of the players, they know they were not alone in winning. Great football coaches serve different teams across America and it happened that LSU was blessed enough to make great college football history with their coaches.
